It was inspired by the Arch of Septimus Severus in Rome.

They were later returned, so the ones here are replicas.

Place de la Concorde - in this square in 1793 King Louis XVI was guillotined.
The obelisque was a gift from Egypt and comes from the ruins of the temple at Luxor.
It is 3,300 years old, made of pink granite, 75 ft tall, and weighs 220 tons.
It was offered to the French goverment in 1829, but it took four years to get the obelisque to Paris.
